Reading a Long Document with Claude: How to Do It Fast and What to Keep Out
Author: Artem Krol · Published:
How can I quickly go through a long document with Claude, and what should I never upload?
Upload the document and ask Claude for a short summary, the main terms and a list of questions to check, then verify every important point against the original [1]. Never upload anything you aren't allowed to share: ID numbers, passwords, payment details, health data, or third-party files under a confidentiality obligation. Remove or mask personal details first [2].
How do I prepare a long document before uploading it?
Claude can accept PDF files as input, and Anthropic's documentation describes how that support works [1]. But the quality of the answer depends first on what you give it. In my experience, a clean file with selectable text works much better than a blurry scan or a crooked phone photo.
A little preparation saves corrections later. Before uploading, skim the document and decide what you actually need from it.
- Use the original file instead of a scan or screenshot.
- If only one section matters, upload only that section, not the whole binder.
- Remove or replace names, ID numbers, addresses and bank account details.
- Decide the goal up front: understand, compare, decide, or prepare a reply.
Which prompts give a useful summary and list of questions?
A vague request like "summarize this" returns a vague answer. Tell Claude who you are, what the document is and what you will do with it. For example: "I run a small business and this is an office lease. Give me a plain-language summary, list the main terms, then write questions I should clarify before signing."
After the first answer, work in small steps. That way each part is easier to check on its own.
- A short summary you can read in a minute, then a detailed one by section.
- A table of main terms: parties, duration, payments, obligations, penalties, termination.
- A list of review questions: what is unclear, what is missing, what differs from your usual practice.
- A rewrite for a different audience, such as a two-paragraph explanation for a partner who doesn't read legal text.
What should I never upload to Claude?
The basic rule: don't upload information you have no right or permission to share with an outside service. That includes material under a non-disclosure agreement, client documents, and anything your company has forbidden to leave the building. Read the privacy terms and settings of the service you use in the official Help Center [2].
For data protection questions, such as what you may do with customer or employee data, rely on a lawyer and official sources rather than an AI answer.
- National IDs, passports and driver's licenses.
- Passwords, access keys and verification codes.
- Credit card and bank account details.
- Medical information and personal employee files.
- Client and supplier documents covered by a confidentiality clause.
- Anything your company has explicitly banned from being uploaded.
How do I check that the summary is correct?
AI can miss a clause, paraphrase a sentence differently from the original, or answer confidently about something the document never says. So the summary is a starting point, not a replacement for reading.
A habit that works for me: ask Claude to quote the exact sentence and name the section where it appears. Then open the original and check it yourself.
- Ask for a quote and section reference for every key term.
- Read the clauses about money, duration and termination yourself.
- Ask: "What in this document is unclear or contradictory?" and "What is missing?"
- Compare Claude's summary with your own quick skim and look for gaps.
Where does Claude stop and a professional begin?
Claude is not a replacement for a lawyer. It helps you read quickly, understand how the document is built, and walk into a meeting with good questions. Decisions about signing, financial risk or disputes belong to professionals.
In my course, Claude for working with documents, we practice exactly this: going through long documents, checking the result, and learning what must not be uploaded. A document that used to take hours can become a focused read, but only if you hand over the material correctly and verify the outcome.
Questions and answers
Can I upload a contract if I deleted the names?
Removing names helps but isn't always enough: amounts, addresses or unique descriptions can still identify the parties. If the contract has a confidentiality clause, check what it permits before uploading.
What should I do with a scanned document?
If possible, get the original file. With a poor scan, Claude may misread words or numbers, so check the key points against the page.
Is a summary enough to sign a document?
No. A summary helps you understand the document and prepare questions, but read the important clauses yourself before signing and consult a lawyer in risky cases.
